WATERCOLOR SUPPLY LIST:
Brushes: Flat 2" wash brush , Flat 1", 3/4", and a 1/4" , Rounds - #12, #8 & either a # 4 or #6 and a #1 Scrubber brush
Watercolors: These are my current choices, but students are welcome to use colors of their preference. I use Winsor Newton as well as Holbein, Daler-Rowney, Da Vinci, and Cheap Joe's:
French ultramarine blue, New Gamboge, Permanent Alizarine Crimson, Winsor Red, Thalo green, Indian Yellow, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Blue, Raw Sienna, Brown Madder, Burnt Umber, Indigo, Thalo Blue, Cadmium Yellow and Rose Madder…plus Gouache - white
Paper: 140# D'Arches cold press
Palette: I use a John Pike, but any white surface palette with bins is acceptable.
Board or support: wooden or masonite board
large enough to accommodate paper. Quarter
sheet size of 11 x 15, half sheet size of 15 x 22,
and full sheet size 22 x 30 are good sizes to
have. (Tempered or varnished board is best)
Other supplies: Four clips for securing paper to board, small, artificial type sponge, water container, sketch book and pencil, and tissues or paper towels
Nel Dorn Byrd has painted in watercolor since 1970. She studied art at Midland Institue of Fine Arts, Richland College, and the University of Texas at Dallas. She has studied at home and abroad with many watercolor instructors, traveling and painting in twelve different countries. Her paintings have been accepted in over two hundred juried regional and national exhibitions and she has received numerous awards and honors. Nel is a signature member of several watercolor societies and her work has been included in many publications and books. She paints in a loose, impressionistic style and her works often depict strong light and dark patterns with the play of light giving excitement and interest to any subject. Nel feels that working in a series is oftentimes conducive to the creative process.
