The Garden Capital of Texas Committee is planning to celebrate Nacogdoches' 300th birthday by planting planning to celebrate Nacogdoches' 300th birthday by planting 300 trees in 2016 and will kick off the effort by planting 25 trees at University Park Plaza, along Austin Street and University Drive. "We have had a great deal of success with tree plantings in the past three years, so we wanted to set a lofty goal to honor this special moment in Nacogdoches history," said Angela Wiederhold, Garden Capital Chairperson. "We're celebrating our past by doing something for the future." The project like most Garden Capital plantings is a group effort involving several public and private organizations. Richard Cook at Cooks Nursery has located crepe myrtle trees that will be large enough to make an instant impact, SFA Gardens is providing the mulch, Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful will help with shovels, and Texas Forest Service will have experts on hand to make sure Garden Capital Volunteers plant the trees properly.
