About Alaina Helton
Alaina Helton is a Certified Planner and currently serves as the City Planner and Director of Planning & Neighborhood Services for the City of Nacogdoches. Alaina has two degrees from SFA, including a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in public administration.
While attending graduate school at SFA, Alaina worked as a graduate assistant for the TX Certified Public Manager’s program (while also obtaining her CPM certification), and also served as an intern for both NEDCO and the City of Nacogdoches.
Alaina has over 7 years of experience working as a city planner with various local governments; including serving as the Assistant City Planner for the City of Lufkin, Senior Planner for the City of Frisco, and then Senior Planner and Land Development Planning Administrator for the City of College Station, before coming back to Nacogdoches in January 2020.
During her tenure with the City of Lufkin, Alaina was a member of Leadership Lufkin, Class of 2015, where she designed and co-managed the construction of the City’s first dog park as part of their community development project. Alaina is also a graduating member of Leadership Nacogdoches, Class of 2021.
Alaina has one daughter, Lily, who enjoys playing basketball and singing in their church’s choir. When they’re not attending Lily’s extra-curricular activities they enjoy spending time with their dog and 2 cats.
About Jessica Sowell
Jessica Sowell is originally from Aledo, Texas but got to Nacogdoches as fast as she could. She moved to Nacogdoches in 2005 and is a 2008 graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a BA in History. She started with the City of Nacogdoches as a part time intern in 2008 and has held multiple positions including Curator of Collections and Education, Assistant Historic Sites Manager and Historic Sites & Main Street Manager. She has just recently taken the job of Community Services Assistant Director and assists in the direction of 5 departments. She is married and has a son named Jackson who is 6, but thinks he's full grown.
