Mid-Day Noels Return for 26th Season
COVID-19 has put many holiday plans on hold, but Westminster Presbyterian Church’s “Mid-Day Noels” concerts are moving online to continue this 26-year holiday tradition. Anyone with access to the internet can tune into facebook.com/westpresnac for an uplifting, concise and free musical concert featuring world-class musicians. Partners with the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce will join organizer and Westminster Music Director Dr. Deborah Dalton for a virtual unwrapping of the series which will broadcast live on Facebook prior to the launch of the first concert.
The 2020 concert series begins Thurs., Dec. 3 at 12:15 p.m. with the SFA Percussion Ensemble. This ensemble prides itself on maintaining the highest standard of percussion performance through various musical styles including contemporary percussion, classical transcriptions, popular and jazz arrangements, ragtime, African and Eastern ethnic music as well as novelty works. Director Dr. Brad Meyer is a percussion educator, artist, and composer with an extensive and diverse background. Meyer is the Director of Percussion Studies at SFA where he also directs the steel band (“Jacks of Steel”), teaches private percussion lessons and the percussion methods course, and is the coordinator/arranger for the SFA Lumberjack Marching Band’s percussion sections. Meyer’s international performances and clinics have taken him to Austria, Taiwan, France, South Africa, and Slovenia.
The SFA Chamber Singers will perform Thurs., Dec. 10 at 12:15 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Michael Murphy. The SFA Chamber Singers is a highly select chamber ensemble comprised of graduate students and advanced undergraduate students from the SFA A Cappella Choir. Murphy is Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at SFA where he conducts choral ensembles, teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in conducting, choral literature, choral techniques, and administers the masters in choral conducting program. Murphy serves as an active adjudicator and clinician for workshops, festivals, honor choirs, and clinics and his international conducting experiences include Austria, China, Czech Republic, Sweden, and Germany.
Selah Strings will close out the 26th season with a performance on Thurs., Dec. 17 at 12:15 p.m. Selah Strings features Brenda Josephsen and Ana Watts on violin, Alison Wier playing viola and Amanda Burns on cello. The lively program will include traditional Christmas carols like “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
Organizer and Westminster Music Director Dalton calls the free Mid-Day Noel concerts a “Christmas Present” from Westminster to Nacogdoches.
Westminster Presbyterian Church is a designated Texas Historic Landmark that traces its roots to the first Protestant minister to be ordained on Texas soil. The invitation to worship at Westminster Church is always open to persons who wish to join us in witness and service to Jesus Christ.
