Why Focus on Youth Substance Use? In Texas, more than half of 7-12th graders say they have used alcohol at some point in their lives. Nearly one-third have used some type of tobacco product, and 1 in 5 has used cannabis. This is concerning because youth substance use can harm the developing brain and is associated with an increased risk of things like impaired driving, poor academic performance, depression, anxiety, and addiction. Despite the serious consequences, young people continue to use these substances. What Is a Community Regional Forum? Regional Forums explore ways communities can work together to address youth substance use and the associated consequences. Forums help facilitate introductions between stakeholders in the community, increase collaboration and engagement, and mobilize participants to reduce youth substance use in a coordinated and strategic way. At a Forum, you can expect to learn from expert speakers, hear thoughtful panel discussions, and engage in conversations with fellow community members working to address identified obstacles. Attendees will walk away with a greater understanding of issues related to youth substance use, tools to effectively create change, and new partnerships that will help solve their community’s complex challenges.
