193rd Anniversary of the Battle of Nacogdoches

The Sons of the Republic of Texas, in conjunction with the Adolphus Sterne Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and the Stone Fort Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, invite the public to attend a special commemoration marking the 193rd Anniversary of the Battle of Nacogdoches. The ceremony will take place on the back stage of the Charles Bright Visitor Center at 200 E. Main Street. Shade and seating will be provided. The event will include a brief presentation on the Battle’s historical significance, recognition of the men who fought, and a rededication of the monument honoring their contributions. The Battle of Nacogdoches, which took place from August 2nd to August 3rd, 1832, was one of the earliest armed conflicts between Anglo-Texian settlers and Mexican centralist authorities. At that time, Texas was divided into three administrative regions under Mexican control: the Department of Bexar, Department of Brazos, and the Department of Nacogdoches. In Nacogdoches, rising tensions with Mexican military leadership under Colonel José de las Piedras led local citizens to take up arms. Over two days of conflict throughout the town — including key points in the downtown area — the settlers ultimately succeeded in forcing Piedras and his troops to retreat. The victory became a foundational step toward Texas’ eventual struggle for independence. The monument being rededicated is located at the corner of North and Pilar Streets, marking the site where the Red House once stood. The Red House served as Colonel Piedras’ military headquarters and played a central role during the battle. Though the structure no longer remains, the site stands as an enduring reminder of Nacogdoches’ critical role in Texas history. This ceremony, organized by the Sons of the Republic of Texas, in conjunction with the Adolphus Sterne Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and the Stone Fort Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, with support from the City of Nacogdoches Historic Sites, aims to serve as a prelude to future annual events commemorating the Battle of Nacogdoches and to support ongoing efforts to educate the community about this pivotal moment that helped set the course for Texas independence.
