DESCRIPTION:Learn\, Grow\, Eat & GO! With Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service \n\n \n\nA garden can be good for the mind\, body\, and soul!  Join Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Nacogdoches on August 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for a one day workshop to cultivate awareness of how school gardens can be used as a tool to educate children and families on the importance of healthy eating and active lifestyles.   This workshop will be held at the Nacogdoches County Extension Office located on 203 West Main Street in Nacogdoches Texas.   Using the new Junior Master Gardener (JMG) Learn\, Grow\, Eat\, Go curriculum (LGEG)\, and Walk Across Texas (WAT) lessons and activities\, participants will learn how to coordinate classroom learning to:\n\n \n\n         LEARN! incorporate science\, math\, language arts\, and health with a school garden\n\n         GROW! incorporate vegetable tastings\n\n         EAT! Participate in vegetable recipe demonstrations and\n\n         GO! increase physical activity in children and their families\n\n \n\nTexas A&M AgriLife Extension trainers will demonstrate how health/nutrition and physical activity programs can strengthen the health and wellness of your students\, their families\, and the community\; as well as\, support your students' academic needs in relation to the state assessment requirements. Curriculums are aligned with the state mandated TEKS and support both the STAAR Readiness and STAAR Supporting Standards in Science\, Math and ELA.\n\n \n\nParticipants will learn about outcomes from the Texas GROW! EAT! GO! research project in the areas of improved child and family health behaviors and increased classroom participation and student engagement. Participants will learn about JMG\, WAT and LGEG curricula/success stories and the variety of ways school garden programs can be supported through local extension office's personnel and Master Gardener and Master Wellness volunteers\, district food service directors and staff\, SHACs\, parent groups\, ESL participants and community groups such as churches\, Junior Leagues and other organizations. This training will empower participants to think of school garden programs in new ways (community gardens) and as effective teaching tools to improve children and family engagement and health.\n\n \n\nThe workshop fee is $50.00 per person and will include one copy of the LGEG curriculum\, lunch\, and CBEC hours.
