A Tradition Is Born Announcement of Battle of the Piney Woods Press Conference Photo Gallery On Oct. 20, 2009, the athletic leadership at Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State made an announcement that will forever change one of the oldest Football Championship Subdivision rivalries in the country. The respective administrations of the two schools, in conjunction with Lone Star Sports and Entertainment and the Houston Texans, publicly announced an agreement that will put the Battle of the Piney Woods at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, for at least the next four seasons. The move was just the latest effort to help grow the second-oldest FCS rivalry in the state. Two years prior, the student leadership at both universities worked together to revive an old tradition by creating a traveling trophy to be handed to the game's winner each season. The move to NRG Stadium only increased the rivalry's visibility, as well as that of the two football programs, in Houston, the fourth-largest city in the United States. With the two schools estimating a combined alumni population of over 80,000 in the greater Houston area alone, the game had potential for a strong crowd year-in and year-out, and through two years, the results cannot be denied. The teams have combined to bring in more than 24,000 fans to NRG Stadium in both 2010 and 2011 with the games ranking as the top two most attended regular season games in Southlan Conference history. But to keep the Battle of the Piney Woods as one of the elite games in the FCS, that's where the fans come in. We need you to help get the word out to friends, family and fellow alumni. Let them know that you're excited about the chance to root on your team in one of the finest football facilities in the world and encourage them to come along for the game. The stadium experience is guaranteed to be second to none, and the rivalry will definitely have all the fire and passion fans have come to expect. We can't wait to see you in Houston. Axe 'em Jacks!

Oct 11    PINK About It
Well the phrase goes without saying which, in turn, makes up the overall purpose of the event.

With our name being both our slogan and our title we hope to drive our local community in a direction that ends with local individuals actually thinking about how breast cancer has, or could possibly, affect them.

In other words we are asking people to think about it, or in this case PINK About It. Well, PINK About It revolves around a local event in which a movement might unearth a way in which the community can assimilate in order to collaboratively raise awareness for a topic affecting each of us.

After all, whether it is directly or indirectly we are all affected by breast cancer in some shape or form. Our goal through the charity event, PINK About It, is to give the driven young youth within our local Nacogdoches community an opportunity to proactively support breast cancer care facilities and research.

The charity event itself features a powder-puff flag football tournament aimed at raising the awareness of breast cancer within our community through the spirit of friendly and emulous competition.

Furthermore, PINK About It will concurrently be poised towards the compilation of sizable, charitable donations for the Nacogdoches Memorial Foundation, Women's Wellness. PINK About It!

“This is a great way to learn another language. We have had people ask if we offer English or Spanish classes. While this is not a class, this is one avenue for English-speakers who are interested in practicing their Spanish skills to meet with Spanish-speakers who want to practice their English skills. We converse in one language for the first half-hour then switch to the other language for the second half-hour. We learn from each other and have a great time. All levels of speaking abilities are welcome. No registration is required,” says Mercedes Franks, library director.

Oct 26    English/Spanish Conversation Group
If your New Year’s Resolution is to meet people and learn Spanish, then the Judy B. McDonald Public Library has just the program.

The library is offering a second Spanish/English Conversation Group on alternating Mondays at 5:00 p.m. beginning February 2. This is in addition to the original conversation group that meets every Tuesday at noon.
