May 8    "The Foreigner" at Lamp-Lite Theatre
Back by Popular Demand
The Foreigner played here over twenty years ago when it had just recently closed from a long New York run, winning an award as Best Off Broadway Show of the Season.  We are happy to revive this favorite comedy from the past which will star two of the original actors: Ron Hurst and Katherine Whitbeck, who will play the comic romantic leads.  Jackie Vose will play Betty, the mistress of the bed and breakfast; Garland Buffalo, plays Froggy, the jovial dynamite expert; Scott Parrish will play the simple Ellerd; Ken Untiedt is cast as the preacher; and Les Balty will play the feared redneck.  Set in the Georgia mountains, the play tells the story of a painfully shy recently divorced Englishman who pretends not to speak English.  Consequently he learns everyone's secretes and is compelled to rejoin the human race and embark on madcap adventures.  A warm-hearted evening of comedy describes the show!

With annual prescribed burns, regular thinning, and standing snags, Greg maintains this 22 year old, eight acre stand of loblolly pines as a habitat for cavity dwelling birds and pine savanna wildlife.  He named it for his outdoor loving grandfather who formerly owned the property.  Plan to see brown-headed nuthatches, pine warblers, eastern bluebirds, tufted titmice, Carolina chickadees, Carolina wrens, eastern phoebes, and an assortment of woodpeckers.  Prepare to hike approximately one mile on dirt trails and wear comfortable shoes.

Benefit to help crash survivor

Posted

A Nacogdoches man who was the passenger in a vehicle that was struck by a tractor-trailer in October has since undergone more than 20 surgeries and procedures, leading close friends and family to plan a benefit in his honor.

The vehicle driver, Kirk Owens, was killed in the collision.

"My dear friend and old classmate, Courtney Allen, was in a horrible car accident back on Oct. 13, 2014 that, also claimed the life of one of my childhood friends, Kirk Owens," said Matt Ball, a longtime friend of Allen. "Courtney suffered extensive injuries including a traumatic brain injury.

"Courtney is currently at Memorial Hermann’s The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) in Houston still recovering from the accident and getting the best possible rehabilitation treatment."

According to a Texas Department of Public Safety report from October, a 2014 Kenworth truck "was traveling northbound on (state Hwy. 19)" and a 2013 Ford Taurus driven by Robert Kirk Owens, 43, "was traveling southbound and lost control due to the wet conditions and veered into the path of (the truck)."

After spending 136 days at TIRR undergoing physical, occupational and speech therapies, Allen was moved this week to the Touchstone Neurorecovery Center in Conroe, Ball said.

With six months of medical costs stacked up, event organizers hope the benefits will curb costs for the family as Allen works through physical therapy sessions.

"It is a miracle that Courtney even survived the accident and he has made tremendous progress in his recovery," said Ball. "His story is truly remarkable."

Live music is scheduled and a bounce house will be inflated for kids. Organizers are not sure but hope Allen will be in a good enough condition to attend.

The benefit for Courtney Allen will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Nacogdoches Christ Episcopal Church, located at 1430 N Mound Street.

Smoked chicken plates will be sold for $10, and chicken and sausage plates for $15. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time at www.eventbrite.com by searching for Benefit for Courtney Allen.

Tickets are also available at the offices of Dr. Bryan Davis, Dr. Carey Lindemann, and Dr. Kelley Moon in Nacogdoches; or from Mike Love & Associates in Lufkin. Plates can be picked up via a drive-through line or enjoyed at the church.

The last day to purchase tickets online or at the offices will be Sunday, May 3. For those unable to attend, donations can be made on the Eventbrite website or by going to www.troopingforcourtney.myevent.com.

To volunteer or offer monetary assistance for the event, contact Ashley Allen at Benefit4courtney@gmail.com.

The library is offering a second Spanish/English Conversation Group on alternating Mondays at 5:00 p.m. beginning February 2. This is in addition to the original conversation group that meets every Tuesday at noon.
“This is a great way to learn another language. We have had people ask if we offer English or Spanish classes. While this is not a class, this is one avenue for English-speakers who are interested in practicing their Spanish skills to meet with Spanish-speakers who want to practice their English skills. We converse in one language for the first half-hour then switch to the other language for the second half-hour. We learn from each other and have a great time. All levels of speaking abilities are welcome. No registration is required,” says Mercedes Franks, library director.

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and the Children's Performing Arts Series will conclude the 2014-2015 CPAS season with two performances of "The Lightning Thief" on Tuesday, May 12.

Presented by Theatreworks USA and adapted from the book by Rick Riordan, "The Lightning Thief" is the story of Percy Jackson, who is about to be kicked out of boarding school ... again. And that's the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. Performances are at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

Tickets are $6 for individuals and $5 per person for groups of 20 or more. To order tickets, call 936.468.6407 or 888.240.ARTS. Visit the CPAS website at www.cpas.sfasu.edu for additional information.

May 15    "The Foreigner" at Lamp-Lite Theatre

May 19    Glenn Shepard seminar 2015
Hire With Confidence, Fire Without Fear,
Tame Toxic Employees
and Put Your Team on the
Fast Track to Record-Shattering Success

Glenn Shepard will present a half-day seminar based on his book, How to Manage Problem Employees.
This Chamber seminar is Tuesday May 19. 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Quality Inn, 3400 South Street in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Included in the seminar:
- The one strategy you MUST know to fix bad attitudes. Use this “attitude adjustment” tool and watch problem employees turn into stars.
- How to keep employees from questioning you with just five perfectly polite but almost magically powerful words.
- Two simple things that actually motivate people more than money. A plus under any circumstances but a HUGE blessing if your company or organization is on a tight budget.
- A quick and easy action you can take to end gossip (and no, it doesn't involve a muzzle.)
- How to fire without fear – because you know what you're doing is totally and completely legal.  There ARE times when you need to fire someone before he or she sets you up for a lawsuit – or worse.
- How to recognize the line between helping employees and enabling them -- and keep from crossing it.

May 25    English/Spanish Conversation Group
If your New Year’s Resolution is to meet people and learn Spanish, then the Judy B. McDonald Public Library has just the program.

May 28    Community invited to see Nacogdoches ISD facility needs

Join committee to decide district’s future plans
Nacogdoches ISD parents, staff and the community can learn about the district’s facility needs and how to be a part of a committee to determine subsequent steps to address them during a meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, in the Nacogdoches High School commons.

Three categories — safety, capacity and efficiency  — will be discussed.

“This meeting is open to anyone who is interested in the future of Nacogdoches ISD,” said Nacogdoches ISD Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes.  “We plan to show participants what we see, and then invite them to be part of further exploring the matter.”

Those interested in serving on the facility committee will have the opportunity to sign up during the May 28 meeting. The group will divide into sub committees that tour campuses, provide input into a survey to determine community wishes and, as a whole, will help decide what final recommendations are made to the board of trustees.

“We want our community’s thoughts and visions to be at the forefront of determining what happens in their school district,” Hayes said.  “Plans include six full committee meetings, but we understand not everyone can make every meeting. We only ask that members be at as many as possible so their voice is heard in the process.”

Those who cannot make the May 28 meeting may contact Communications Coordinator Rayanne DuChane to have their name added to the committee list by emailing rduchane@nacisd.org or 936-569-5000, ext. 8845.
