Apr 1    Senior Discount Day - downtown

Senior Discount Day

Participating merchants in historic downtown Nacogdoches are gearing up for their monthly installment of Senior Discount Day.  The monthly shopping promotion is held on the 1st Tuesday of each month, which means seniors can receive an extra discount when shopping the red brick streets.

“This is a great opportunity to come downtown and support small businesses and shop nac first, in case you missed all the holiday shopping,” said Main Street Manager Sarah O’Brien.

A variety of downtown merchants participate in the Senior Discount Day. A list of participating merchants will be available for pick up at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, located at 200 E. Main Street.

Merchants for November include: A Beautiful You Salon and Spa, Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau, Brick Street Antiques, CASA’s Blue Ribbon Gift Shop, Glass Castles, Coats Gallery, Macy May’s, Main Street Antique Mall, Old Town Antiques, Special Finds Antiques & Collectibles, Stuff N Such, Heart of Texas, House of Traditions, the Good Book, Dollheads, Rachel’s Antiques & Unique and Lyric’s French Knot Quilt Shop.

“Special thanks to all of our merchants for making this in-store promotion possible,” said O’Brien.

While the definition of Senior Citizen varies historic downtown Nacogdoches merchants will honor the Senior Discount to residents and visitors over 55 years of age.

The 10% discount will be honored at all of the participating merchants throughout the discount day.

Apr 4    Ducks Unlimited Stephen F. Austin Spring Banquet
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ABOUT Ducks Unlimited is the world's leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation. Read more about DU and get the latest information on habitat conservation and membership.

You also can download DU's National Fact Sheet (PDF) and the 2008 Annual Report. During the past fiscal year, 88 percent of DU's expenditures were converted directly to conservation work. This habitat is needed desperately by ducks, geese and other wetland-dependent wildlife to survive.

DU's VISION
The vision of Ducks Unlimited is wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever. MISSION STATEMENT Ducks Unlimited conserves, restores and manages wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl.

These habitats also benefit other wildlife and people. HISTORY The idea for Ducks Unlimited was born by the winds that created the Dust Bowl. Untold acres of wetland habitat vanished in the 1930s, taking with them the promise of generations of waterfowl. In 1937, a small group of conservationists who realized that the majority of North America's waterfowl breed in the Canadian prairies, organized to raise money in the United States for waterfowl conservation in Canada. It was the unique idea that became Ducks Unlimited. DUSFA strives to help with the mission of the Ducks Unlimited National Organization with two major fundraising events a year.

There will be appetizers, dinner, desserts, live/silent auctions, games, raffles...FUN for all ages! Prizes will include guns, hunting accessories, prints, home decor, gift baskets and more. Sponsorships available at various levels. Donations are appreciated.

Apr 10    SFA Gardens Lecture Series to feature Texas Tomato Specialist
SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in the new Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches.

Retired Texas A&M Extension Vegetable Specialist Dr. Jerry Parsons will present “Growing the Best Tomatoes in Texas.”

Jerry Parsons is a retired horticulture specialist with the Texas Cooperative Extension in San Antonio. He has been a popular Extension Service personality for more than three decades, becoming something of a cult figure in the agricultural world of South Texas. Parsons has been responsible for educating and entertaining the Alamo City and surrounding area with weekly horticultural information on TV, radio, and in newspaper for 34 years.

Although his specialty is vegetable production, Parsons has revolutionized the plant introduction arena and is the father of The Texas Superstar program at Texas A&M University. The plant introduction and promotion program is now copied by similar programs throughout the United States.

Since 1974 when Parsons came to San Antonio as a horticulturist for Texas Cooperative Extension, a system of cooperative testing and local marketing has introduced productive hybrid tomatoes (Spring Giant, Bonus, Big Set, Celebrity, Jack Pot, Bingo, Carnival, Whirlaway, Heatwave, SunMaster, Surefire, Merced, Amelia, Solar Fire, SunPride, BHN 968,  BHN 444, Tycoon, and Tygress), peppers (Summer Sweet 860 Bell Pepper, Bell Tower Bell Pepper, Capistrano Bell Pepper, Hidalgo Serrano, TAM Mild Jalapeno, Grande Jalapeno and Rio Grande Gold Sweet Jalapeno), Brussels sprouts (Prince Marvel), cantaloupe (Magnum 45, TAM Uvalde), sweet corn (Funks Sweet-G 90, Honeycomb, Merit), onion (Texas Supersweet 1015Y, Grano 502, Granex/Vidalia), squash (Dixie, Multipik), broccoli (Green Comet, Baccus), spinach (Fall Green and Coho), and cauliflower (Snow Crown). Parsons has also introduced Satsuma mandarin oranges as container plants for colder climates to Texas gardeners.

In addition he has introduced such popular flowers as 'Blue Shade' and dwarf pink ruellias, Tex-Tuf verbenas, firebush, Texas Gold columbine, Indigo Spires salvia, Carpet petunias, mari-mum marigolds, Plum Parfait, Eclipse, and Burgundy Sun coleus, Belinda’s Dream rose, Blue Princess verbena, VIP and Laura Bush petunias, firespike, Stars and Stripes pentas, Moy Grande,  Red River, and Flare hibiscus, Laura Bush petunia, firespike, Stars and Stripes pentas, Bunny Bloom larkspur, and dwarf bush morning glory.

Stirring up a little controversy, he also introduced a host of new Texas bluebonnet colors including Barbara Bush lavender, Abbott Pink, and Texas Maroon—his own creations, while developing the Texas state flower into a bedding plant and a multi-million dollar industry.
Parsons is often described as the most popular public gardening speaker in the Lone Star State, sometimes deriding but always delighting gardeners with his enthusiastic combination of irreverent and educational humor.

The Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series is normally held the second Thursday of each month at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA  Pineywoods Native Plant Center. A rare plant raffle will be held after the program. The lecture is free and open to the public, but donations to the Theresa and Les Reeves lecture series fund always are appreciated. Parking is available at the nearby Raguet Elementary School, 2428 Raguet St.

Apr 10    Archie McDonald Speaker Series: Lyle Lovett
The legendary Lyle Lovett will be this year's featured guest at SFA's Archie McDonald Speaker Series. Lovett has broadened the definition of Americana music in a career that spans 14 albums and more than four million records sold. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a manner that defies convention and breaks down barriers. Lovett has won four Grammy Awards: Best Country Album in 1996; Best Country Duo/Group with Vocal in 1994; Best Pop Vocal Collaboration in 1994; and Best Country Male Vocal in 1989. He received the Americana Music Association's inaugural Trailblazer Award and the Texas Medal of Arts Award, and he was named the 2011 Texas State Musician. Lovett has celebrated more than two decades of acclaimed work and garnered seven top-10 albums on the Billboard charts. Apr 12    Driving Jacks 3rd Annual 5K Fun Run
About the 5K: The Driving Jacks 5K Fun Run and Raffle is hosted by SFASU Driving Jacks Alumni as a fundraiser benefiting Driving Jacks. Driving Jacks relies on private donations, fundraisers, and grants to pay for significant expenses such as rental car costs, gas, insurance, and much more. Because of limited funds they cannot always operate enough cars to meet their ever-increasing demand. Furthermore, current fundraising sources will eventually be outweighed by the increasing costs of expenses, potentially placing Driving Jacks' future operations in jeopardy. We want to ensure their service and responsible choice message will continue well into the future. Additionally, free of financial restraints, Driving Jacks can focus on improving efficiency, and proactively assisting the start-up of other safe-ride programs throughout the USA.

Apr 12    Lincoln Durham
This show is a reschedule from January 25th. Lincoln was sick and was not able to perform, but we're very excited to get him back so quickly. Lincoln Durham simply owns the stage! Equipped with old, makeshift 1950s amps, resonators, fiddles, harmonicas, tin can microphones, slides, stomp boards and you name it, Lincoln gives birth to a sound that transcends genres. His dark, poetic and raw writing style is reminiscent of his mentor R.W. Hubbard, telling tales that Poe would have been proud of. His guitar work is like a locomotive pumping and driving the runaway train that is Lincoln Durham and his music. This is not to imply that any of it is in any way out of control. On the contrary, he never stops driving that train. $7
