Oct 30 - Jan 10    SFA presents Distaffs Folk Art Exhibition
The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art presents the exhibition "To Spin A Yarn Distaffs: Folk Art and Material Culture," showing from Oct. 30 through Jan. 10 at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The exhibition features simple tools representative of one aspect of the weaving tradition.

Curator Michael T. Ricker will speak at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, followed by a reception. Historian Sarida Steed-Bradley will give a spinning demonstration at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. For information, call (936) 468-1131.

Senior Discount Day

Participating merchants in historic downtown Nacogdoches are gearing up for their monthly installment of Senior Discount Day.  The monthly shopping promotion is held on the 1st Tuesday of each month, which means seniors can receive an extra discount when shopping the red brick streets.

“This is a great opportunity to come downtown and support small businesses and shop nac first, in case you missed all the holiday shopping,” said Main Street Manager Sarah O’Brien.

A variety of downtown merchants participate in the Senior Discount Day. A list of participating merchants will be available for pick up at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, located at 200 E. Main Street.

Merchants for November include: A Beautiful You Salon and Spa, Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau, Brick Street Antiques, CASA’s Blue Ribbon Gift Shop, Glass Castles, Coats Gallery, Macy May’s, Main Street Antique Mall, Old Town Antiques, Special Finds Antiques & Collectibles, Stuff N Such, Heart of Texas, House of Traditions, the Good Book, Dollheads, Rachel’s Antiques & Unique and Lyric’s French Knot Quilt Shop. 

“Special thanks to all of our merchants for making this in-store promotion possible,” said O’Brien.


While the definition of Senior Citizen varies historic downtown Nacogdoches merchants will honor the Senior Discount to residents and visitors over 55 years of age. 

The 10% discount will be honored at all of the participating merchants throughout the discount day.

Dec 5    "PAL IN THE PARKS" FAMILY PLAY DATES
Nacogdoches Parks Advocacy League (PAL) members will host bi-monthly play dates on the first and third Fridays of each month at various City parks to encourage visitation and knowledge of all the parks managed by the City. The play dates will be held after school from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and are open to all ages. The first "PAL in the Parks" playdate will be held Friday, September 5 at Temple Park Spray Station, 1100 Martin Luther King Blvd.

 Nacogdoches PAL (Parks Advocacy League) is a community-action group founded in June 2014 by a group of citizens to improve the aesthetics and function of Nacogdoches City parks and park facilities for year-round enjoyment by the whole community via organized stewardship and funding development.

The Judy B. McDonald Public Library invites the public to an informal monthly workshop for seniors who want to brush up on their new technologies.  The first workshop will be Friday, September 5th at 4:00 p.m and will continue on the first Friday of each month. 

“The library staff loves to lend a hand to those needing a bit of guidance with their smart phones, eReaders and laptops, and we have regular technology classes, but sometimes people just have a quick question,” says Crystal Hicks, assistant library director.  “We’re implementing a monthly meeting in which staff will be available to help those who don’t need a complete course, but just a clarification or tutorial.”

The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present free, one-night screenings of two short documentaries Friday night, Dec. 5, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches. The night's features include the Oscar-winning documentary "The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life," directed by Malcolm Clarke, and "A Better Me," written and directed by Drew Scott.

The combined choirs at Stephen F. Austin State University, along with the Orchestra of the Pines, will present "An SFA Christmas Garland" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.
The holiday concert will feature Part 1 - often referred to as the "Christmas portion" - of George Frideric Handel's "Messiah," selections from Pyotr IlyichTchaikovsky's ballet, "The Nutcracker" and a community caroling of an arrangement of carols by Leroy Anderson, titled "A Christmas Festival."

SFA Gardens to Host Holiday Wreath-making Seminar
 
The SFA Gardens will host a garden seminar “Deck the Halls—Using Evergreens to Decorate for the Holidays.”
 
Evergreen branches and garlands once served as symbols of enduring life and a fruitful year to come.  Join Dawn Stover, Research Associate at the SFA Mast Arboretum, to learn how to create elegant wreaths and garlands using materials from the garden.  Participants will learn principles of wreath, garland, and centerpiece construction and make a wreath to enjoy at home for the holidays.  In addition to the traditional wreaths and garlands, Dawn will be introducing new crafts using natural items from the garden and forest.  All materials will be provided.

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and the Children's Performing Arts Series will present "The Monster Who Ate My Pease" in two performances at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, in W.M. This musical, based on the book written by Danny Schnitzlein and illustrated by Matthew Faulkner, tells the funny story of a young boy who doesn't want to eat his peas and makes a deal with a monster who appears under the table to eat the peas for him. When the monster raises the stakes, will the boy face his own fears?

Food drive to benefit North Street Church of Christ’s Harvest House

On Wednesday, Dec. 10, Whataburger customers can show their support for the North Street Church of Christ’s Harvest House by visiting the Whataburger restaurant located at 2617 North St. Customers who donate a minimum of two canned goods between 3 and 8 p.m. will receive a free Whataburger.

This food drive follows the Nov. 17 community fundraiser event, where 20 percent of Whataburger proceeds were donated to the food bank.

“Whataburger is happy to do what we can to help support our neighbors who are suffering from hunger, especially during the holiday season,” said Whataburger Franchisee Chris Johnson. “The work Harvest House does in our community is so important and we truly believe in the cause.”

Family-owned Whataburger has proudly served its famous burgers since 1950 and continues to deliver fresh, made-to-order meals every day with extraordinary customer service. In addition to fundraising, Whataburger supports the communities it serves through charitable giving and volunteerism to a number of nonprofit organizations that focus on children’s charities, cancer research, hunger assistance, disaster relief and military support.

SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, in the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches. SFA Gardens Director David Creech will present “The True and Unabridged Story of This Past Year.”

Creech has been at SFA since 1978 and is director and founder of the SFA Mast Arboretum, Ruby Mize Azalea Garden and Gayla Mize Garden. He also co-directs the Pineywoods Native Plant Center. Creech received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in horticulture from Texas A&M University and his master’s degree from Colorado State. His research efforts have focused on blueberry germplasm and production studies, alternative crops and technology, crop nutrition, and evaluation of new plant materials for the South. He and his wife, Janet, are both active gardeners and love to travel.

The Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series is held the second Thursday of each month at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center. A rare plant raffle will be held after the program.

It is slated for Saturday, Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Nacogdoches High School commons.
Students from several high school organizations — including the Student Council, Early College High School, National Honor Society and Key Club — have volunteered to assist with activities that include:
• Photos with Santa Claus, thanks to the favorite jolly elf and G. Patterson Photographic Studio;

• Arts and crafts stations;

• Reindeer Games;

• The chance for parents to win door prizes donated by local businesses including Nacogdoches Massage Station, WingStop, Nac Burger, Newks and more; and

Nacogdoches Parks Advocacy League (PAL) members will host bi-monthly play dates on the first and third Fridays of each month at various City parks to encourage visitation and knowledge of all the parks managed by the City. The play dates will be held after school from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and are open to all ages. The first "PAL in the Parks" playdate will be held Friday, September 5 at Temple Park Spray Station, 1100 Martin Luther King Blvd.

 Nacogdoches PAL (Parks Advocacy League) is a community-action group founded in June 2014 by a group of citizens to improve the aesthetics and function of Nacogdoches City parks and park facilities for year-round enjoyment by the whole community via organized stewardship and funding development.

Belle Brook Farms at the market this Saturday….
 
Belle Brook Farms Natural Beef solely produce Belgian Blue Beef products. We carry a full line of all natural meat, (raised with no animal by-products), sauces and seasonings as well as smoked products.
 
Things you might find this time of year: baked goods (cakes, mini cheesecakes, cookies, fried pies & pies), candles, canned goods (chow-chow, jams & jellies, marmalades, preserves, pickled vegetables, salsas & relishes), artisan Texas cheese, free-range eggs, tilapia fish & fillets, freshly cut flowers, local raw honey, jewelry, plants (cacti, bedding plants, house plants, fruit trees, trees, whips & Valencia heirloom tomatoe plants), organic pork (pork chops, breakfast sausage and REAL bacon), soaps (lye and herbal), sugar cane syrup, tamales, vinegars, fruit wines and wood products.
 
LOCAL PRODUCE: asparagus, green beans, fresh frozen shelled beans (butter, Lima & pinto), beets, broccoli, cabbage (green & red), carrots, celery, chives, cilantro, fennel, fresh garlic, greens (arugula, Swiss chard, collards, Italian dandelion, kale, red Russian kale, mustard, French sorrel, spinach & turnip), herbs (basil, dill, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage & thyme), kolhrabi, lettuce (butter-head, red leaf & Romaine), onions (green, red & yellow), parsley, fresh frozen shelled peas (black eyed, Brown Crowder, Lady cream, purple hull & zipper cream), fresh unshelled peas (English, snow & sugar snap), shelled pecans, red potatoes, radishes (globe & red), squash (yellow & zucchini), strawberries, tomatoes (green, greenhouse, red & sun-dried) and turnips.

The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot. Our Wednesday markets our back so you can shop the Farmer’s Market every Wednesday, from 2 to 6 p.m.
Please note that the Farmer’s Market is a “Smoke Free” facility for the health of our customers and vendors.
