Senior Discount Day

Participating merchants in historic downtown Nacogdoches are gearing up for their monthly installment of Senior Discount Day.  The monthly shopping promotion is held on the 1st Tuesday of each month, which means seniors can receive an extra discount when shopping the red brick streets.

“This is a great opportunity to come downtown and support small businesses and shop nac first, in case you missed all the holiday shopping,” said Main Street Manager Sarah O’Brien.

A variety of downtown merchants participate in the Senior Discount Day. A list of participating merchants will be available for pick up at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, located at 200 E. Main Street.

Merchants for November include: A Beautiful You Salon and Spa, Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau, Brick Street Antiques, CASA’s Blue Ribbon Gift Shop, Glass Castles, Coats Gallery, Macy May’s, Main Street Antique Mall, Old Town Antiques, Special Finds Antiques & Collectibles, Stuff N Such, Heart of Texas, House of Traditions, the Good Book, Dollheads, Rachel’s Antiques & Unique and Lyric’s French Knot Quilt Shop.

“Special thanks to all of our merchants for making this in-store promotion possible,” said O’Brien.

“The library staff loves to lend a hand to those needing a bit of guidance with their smart phones, eReaders and laptops, and we have regular technology classes, but sometimes people just have a quick question,” says Crystal Hicks, assistant library director.  “We’re implementing a monthly meeting in which staff will be available to help those who don’t need a complete course, but just a clarification or tutorial.”

The workshop is free and no registration is required.  Please call 559-2970 for more information.

Nov 13    SFA Gardens Lecture Series
SFA Gardens Lecture Series to feature Dallas Arboretum director of horticulture

October, 2014

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches. Horticulturist Jenny Wegley will present “If I Hear Color One More Time, I’m Changing My Profession.”

A lover of nature, Wegley grew up in Midlothian, a small town 25 miles south of Dallas. She was the kid playing in the flower bed while still in diapers – most likely eating dirt, as well. She had her “first garden” at the ripe old age of 3 and her first succulent trials at the age of 15. She built her first koi pond at 16. Jenny graduated with a Bachelor of Science in horticulture from SFA and, after a short stint in retail, started at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden in 2009. She is now director of horticulture there and still playing in the dirt.

The Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series is held the second Thursday of each month at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center. A rare plant raffle will be held after the program.
Date: November 13, 2014

Nov 22    Asleep at the Wheel with Ray Benson
On Screen and On Stage - It's hard to believe that the Wheel has been making great Western Swing music for over four decades! You'll travel back in time when their new documentary film "Then and Now" opens the evening with its time-capsule look at the long-haired youth that made up the band in the early '70s. Then founding member Ray Benson and the current members of the Wheel take the stage to demonstrate why they've earned the nickname of "the official band of Texas."

Nov 26    Lunch Hour Book Club
Do you like to talk about books?  Are you a reader looking for recommendations on what to read next?  The Judy B. McDonald Public Library offers the program tailored just for you.  The Lunch Hour Book Club is held every other Wednesday at noon and participants bring in whatever they?re currently reading to discuss, recommend or pan.  ?The book club?s goal is to be flexible and afford the opportunity to meet with like-minded people who want an alternative to the traditional book club,? says Crystal Hicks, assistant library director.  ?In a traditional book club, everyone reads the same book, and we?ve found that to be too restrictive.  We always have a great time as a group, introducing each other to books that we might not have otherwise discovered on our own.?
